AI Was Supposed to Widen the Shopping List. Car Buyers Just Narrowed Theirs.

The shopping list got shorter
Kelley Blue Book published its Brand Watch report for the first half of 2026 on August 4, and most coverage led with the powertrain line: hybrid consideration reached a record 22% of shoppers, up from 20% a year earlier, while EV consideration slipped to 10% from 11%.
The finding that matters more to anyone running a store sits a paragraph lower. Among non-luxury brands, exactly two gained shopper consideration in the first half - Kia and Subaru. In luxury, Audi was the only top-10 brand to improve. Body-style consideration concentrated at the same time: non-luxury SUV consideration hit an all-time high of 71% while non-luxury sedan consideration fell to a record-low 25%. In luxury, SUV consideration climbed four points year over year to 79% as sedan consideration fell to 39%.
"The limited number of brands that gained consideration in the first half highlights how selective vehicle shoppers have become," Vanessa Ton, senior manager of market and customer research at Cox Automotive, said in the release.
Brand Watch runs on roughly 12,000 interviews a year with new-vehicle shoppers who intend to buy within the year, so this is not a small-panel wobble. It is a measurable narrowing of what gets a look at all.
Myth vs. data
- The myth: AI shopping assistants are broadening what buyers will consider, so dealers should brace for a wave of first-time cross-shoppers.
- The data: 51.7% of US consumers say generative AI has led them to a brand they had not known about or would not have considered - but only 6.3% say they trust an AI recommendation more than their own brand preference (Amperity 2026 Consumer Priorities Report, reported by EMARKETER, June 2026).
Where consideration actually moved
| Brand Watch measure | H1 2026 | Year over year |
|---|---|---|
| Non-luxury SUV consideration | 71% | All-time high |
| Non-luxury sedan consideration | 25% | Record low |
| Luxury SUV consideration | 79% | Up 4 points |
| Luxury sedan consideration | 39% | Declined |
| Hybrid consideration | 22% | Up from 20% |
| EV consideration | 10% | Down from 11% |

Why the "AI widens consideration" thesis has not landed in cars
The Amperity finding is not wrong, and in apparel, packaged goods and small electronics the widening effect is visible. Vehicles are structurally different in ways that blunt it.
Availability sets the shortlist before preference does. CDK's July 2026 tracking found 58% of buyers located the vehicle they wanted in stock, and only 73% called the search itself easy - down from 75% in June and 80% in May. A recommendation for a brand with no local supply does not survive contact with a lot.
The service network is part of the product. Brand Watch has consistently found durability and safety at the top of the purchase-driver list, with affordability and fuel economy gaining ground over the past five years. Those are multi-year ownership judgments, not attributes an assistant reframes inside one session.
Trade-in equity anchors people to what they already own. Average positive equity on mainstream trade-ins reached a record 13,330 dollars in the most recent Cox Automotive data reported in early August 2026. A buyer sitting on that much equity is negotiating from a known position, usually with the brand and the store that produced it.
The last mile is still physical. Test drive, appraisal and F&I happen in one building. Discovery can be widened online; the shortlist collapses to what is drivable this week.
The net effect is that AI is reshaping how shoppers research more than which brands survive the cut. For dealers, that is the less flattering version of the AI story - and the more operationally useful one.
What a shorter list does to the arithmetic on your phones
If a shopper is weighing four brands, a mishandled call costs you one of four chances. If they are weighing two, it costs you half the consideration set. Narrowing consideration does not reduce the value of an inbound contact. It concentrates it.
And the phone is still where the appointment gets made. CDK research reported August 3, 2026 put the numbers this way:
| CDK phone measure (2026) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Sales appointments booked by phone | 47% |
| Service appointments booked by phone | 61% |
| Service customers who find phone scheduling difficult | 29% |
| Average service hold time | 9.3 minutes |
Nine and a third minutes is not a customer-experience abstraction. On a two-brand shortlist, it is roughly the length of the call the shopper places to the other brand. We have written before about the cost of missed calls; the Brand Watch data changes the denominator in that math rather than the logic of it.
Where AI fits, stated conservatively
CDK's 2026 Friction Points Study puts dealer AI adoption at 39%, up from 28% a year earlier, with nearly three-quarters of adopters integrating it into existing workflows and 69% reporting positive operational impact. Those are self-reported dealer assessments rather than audited outcomes, and they should be read that way.
The defensible claim is narrow. AI answering and routing helps most where the failure mode is capacity: overflow during the 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. peaks, after-hours volume, hold-time abandonment, and routine service scheduling. It helps least where the call turns on judgment or negotiation - which is precisely where CDK found buyers already frustrated, with 58% of shoppers reporting an issue at the dealership in the 2026 study, up from 47% a year earlier.
A store that automates the judgment calls and leaves the capacity problem in place has solved the wrong half.
The hybrid record is a fixed-ops question
Toyota accounted for five of the ten most-considered electrified vehicles in the first half, all of them hybrids, and the Honda Accord Hybrid and Mazda CX-50 Hybrid entered that top ten for the first time. Record hybrid consideration at 22% is a sales headline this year and a service headline for the next ten. The divergence between hybrid and EV demand is now showing up on both sides of the house.
Two practical consequences. First, hybrid-certified technician capacity becomes a constraint before most stores model it. Second, hybrid owners call with more technical questions than ICE owners do - battery warranty terms, regenerative braking service intervals, what the dashboard message means - and those calls are longer. If 61% of service appointments arrive by phone and the average call gets longer, hold times move in the wrong direction without anyone making a decision.
What to measure this month
- Hold time and abandon rate, by department and by hour. Not the daily average. The peaks are where the shortlist gets decided.
- After-hours contact capture. Count what arrives outside staffed hours and what percentage gets a same-evening response, not a next-morning callback.
- Cross-shop questions on inbound calls. If consideration sets are narrowing, ask on the call what else they are looking at. The answer tells you whether you are one of two or one of five.
- Hybrid readiness in fixed ops. Certified technician hours as a share of hybrid units in operation in your PMA, tracked quarterly.
None of that requires buying anything. It does require knowing which of your phone problems is a capacity problem, because that is the only category where automation reliably helps.
The measured read
The first half of 2026 was not a year in which AI blew the consideration set open. It was a year in which shoppers got pickier, concentrated on SUVs and hybrids, and rewarded a handful of brands. Dealers who read that as "fewer shots on goal" are reading it correctly - which is an argument for making the ones you get count, starting with the channel that still books roughly half your sales appointments and most of your service work.
If your phone is where a narrowed consideration set gets won or lost, that is worth measuring before it is worth automating. More on how we think about it at carbuki.com.
